2020 ford explorer

2020 ford explorerThe 2020 Ford Explorer may appear to be just an updated and modest exterior compared to previous years models, but the 2020 Explorer is equipped with a lot more underneath its new design that makes this transformation significant. The 2020 Ford Explorer’s new unibody platform with a longitudinally-mounted engine and standard rear-wheel drive mimics the layout found in many luxury SUVs, marking the third major change to the Explorer’s construction after it went from being a body-on-frame, truck-based SUV for its first four generations to being a transverse-engine crossover for its fifth. However, here we are in 2020 and the sixth generation Ford Explorer is upon us with long awaited improvements.

Ford engineers say that the rear-drive chassis brings a newfound sense of balance thanks to its improved weight distribution. Where the older Ford Explorer models were more ponderous and unwieldly, the 2020 Explorer’s are composed and collected over a variety of different terrains. Engine & performance on the 2020 Ford Explorer

The 2020 Ford Explorer has different options for engine choices across this year’s lineup depending on the trim level. Engine choices include a 300-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four, a 365-horsepower version of the ST’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 and a hybrid drivetrain that uses a 3.3-liter V6 with a single 44-horsepower electric motor. The Ford/GM co-developed 10-speed automatic is the sole transmission choice for every engine and every 2020 Ford Explorer can tow between 5,000 and 5,600 pounds when equipped with an optional towing package.

Most of this year’s Ford Explorer drivers will be more than happy with the 2.3-liter engine and will find its performance more than adequate. The 2020 Ford Explorer also utilizes smart transmission mapping making the most of the available mid-range torque.

The 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid introduces a new type of gas-electric drivetrain setup to the Ford lineup that Ford refers to as a Modular Hybrid Transmission. Rather than the power-split setups seen on many smaller, more economical hybrids, the 2020 Explorer hybrid doesn’t use a planetary gearset or dual electric motor-generators. Instead, it places a single 44-horespower electric motor between the V6 gas engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission. Intended for larger vehicles that are meant to tow and haul, this hybrid system relies less on the electric motor and focuses more on power and capability than fuel sipping.

The twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine available in the 2020 Explorer Platinum trim brings the most power and pizazz. Despite being detuned slightly from the ST’s 400-horsepower version, the 365-horsepower tune in the Platinum moves the 2020 Explorer around with authority and sounds awesome to start up.

Interior & cargo on the 2020 Ford Explorer

Rejoice 2020 Ford Explorer buyers and drivers! Ford has updated the interior of this year’s Explorer to give drivers a more natural seating position and improved outward vision that most everyone wanted.

Expect the same amount of space when using the second and third rows, but the 2020 Ford Explorer does have more cargo volume with all the seats folded. Getting into the third row of seating is easier on this year’s Explorer as passengers can use a button to get back there quickly and efficiently.

Even the front two rows are an improvement compared to previous models on the Ford Explorer. Across all of the 2020 Ford Explorer trim levels, the door panels and dash are soft materials giving a much more natural feel inside the cabin. The dashboard is functional and easy to use, and Explorer drivers will find the climate-control buttons logically placed. The radio can be controlled by real tuning and volume knobs, and the central touchscreen display looks crisp and has well-organized menus.

Is the 2020 Ford Explorer the right vehicle for you?
